Barbecue Sauce Recipe

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 T. vegetable oil
  • 1 small white onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 t. ground mustard
  • 1 6 oz.-can tomato paste
  • 1 28-oz. can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 c. unsulfured molasses
  • 2 T. Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 T. white vinegar
  • Salt and pepper (1 1/2 to 2 teaspoons)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until soft (5 minutes). Add the garlic and cook for about one minute until fragrant. Next, add the tomato paste and mustard, stirring constantly until the mixture turns bright red, about 5 minutes.
  2. Next, add 2 cups of water, tomato sauce, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, salt, and pepper. Stir until the mixture is smooth.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and cover the pan. Simmer for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  4. Lastly, season to taste with vinegar, salt, and pepper. Cool completely.

Notes

Use unsalted organic tomato sauce to better control the salt in the recipe.
